This mask represents a 'tengu' who protects others from evil spirits and demons. He characteristically has an expression of inner determination with the 'clamped' mouth sometimes symbolizing an obstinate personality. If O-beshimi were to unclamp his teeth, it would break into a smile.

In Japan, Karura is an enormous fire-breathing eagle-man who personifies the sun. The flapping of his wings are said to sound like the clap of thunder and is the mortal enemy of snakes and dragons.

Mask of young entertainer. Very sweet with feminine attraction seen in the bangs and curl of the lips. The bangs flare out in the shape of a ginko leaf.

This mask represents a  Lion .Although this mask is a favorite in Japanese Noh Theatre, it's roots are Chinese. Like a roaring lion, O-jishi  has a squarely open mouth displaying metallic gold teeth, fangs and a large red tongue.

This mask depicts a happy old man also known as OKINA. The wavy slit eyes brim with mirth and the joyful mouth exposes only a stubble of teeth. The long beard is symbolic of wisdom and longevity.

Also known as 'The biting Lion'with his muscles tense with rage. Shikami represents a bad demon whose defeat ends in celebration. Sometimes he is used in Noh Theatre to depict a good spirit at which time he wears a court hat (kanmuri) on top of the mask.

Mask representing a strong warrior in full maturity. A Samarai. Wide open eyes, thick eyebrowsflaring upwards in lines paralled by a full mustache, teeth set in readiness. The black strip  at the upper rim represents the juncture with a warrior's hat.

One of the five guardian figures , Fudo is the guardian of fire.The Hosho school has a fine example of Fudo by the carver Kobo,  with a date of 1594. This mask is known as 'Fudo with flesh' because the resin marks on the back appear as if the actor's flesh was stuck to the mask.
